Alliance Francaise French Film Festival 2019

Alliance Francaise Film Festival returns to Palace and Luna Palace Cinemas for its 30th season. The Festival films will be screening at Palace Raine Square, Cinema Paradiso, The Windsor, Luna on SX and Camelot Outdoor Cinema from 13th March until 10th April.

This year there are 54 feature films and documentaries being presented, with many of them having Australian premieres. This year there is also a selection of children’s films. Whilst most of the films are in French with English subtitles, there are a couple of English language films. From comedies and dramas to adult only horror, this eclectic selection of films is certain to have something for everyone.

We were invited along to the Palace Raine Square for a screening of one of the featured films from the festival, The Sisters Brothers.

The film is a western with a stellar Hollywood cast. John C Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix portray the Sisters Brothers; hired assassins on the trail of a scientist (Riz Ahmed) who has allegedly perfected a formula that, when poured into a river, makes gold light up. As the film follows the brothers’ travels, leaving violence and murder in their wake, the scientist teams up with another hired gun John Morris (Jake Gyllenhaal). The two groups finally come across each other and things take a dramatic turn.

The film is quite graphic in parts and not for the faint-hearted, although there are moments of humour thrown in for good measure, and smacks of a Quentin Tarantino film.

The French Film Festival starts on 13th March and runs until 10th April.
