Old Wild West, Hillarys

Yee-ha! The spirit of the pioneering days has landed in Hillarys Boat Harbour with the arrival of the Old Wild West restaurant.

Strangely enough, the Old Wild West chain is not direct from the USA but comes from Italy. Old Wild West has more than 50 restaurants throughout Europe. Choosing to site their first Australian venture in Perth is quite a surprise but it is always good to have international enterprises investing in Western Australia.

We visited for lunch midweek and sat outside to enjoy the sunshine and the view of the marina. The restaurant was busy outside but didn’t have many patrons inside.

Our friends both opted for the crispy chicken burgers with lettuce, tomato, bacon and caesar sauce ($21) accompanied by French fries and Old Wild West’s signature sauce. My husband went for the Cowboy chicken ($19) – a grilled half chicken marinated in a slightly spicy peri peri sauce while I chose the Mississippi sliced tenderloin ($36) on a bed of rocket and Parmesan slices. Both of these dishes were served with thin potato wedges.

The crispy chicken burgers were a big hit, my husband thought the chicken was very average and there was hardly a trace of spice and I was disappointed in my steak. Despite the beef coming from WA’s Harvey there was not a lot of taste. It was tender and cooked perfectly but there was no seasoning and it just wasn’t good enough for the price.

Old Wild West is fully licensed and has a large menu including Tex Mex, salads, ribs and seafood as well as burgers and steaks. Seating is comfortable – there are booths inside and the view from the outside tables is good. Staff are friendly, efficient and very keen to chat about themselves and the restaurant.

Lots of reminders of the Old West are scattered around the restaurant from the saddle by the door to the simulated wagon booths. If you enjoy Country and Western music head to the Old Wild West on Sunday afternoons for a taste of western food and some live C&W!
